Banff Rugby Club - History

HISTORY

The club started back in 1976 as an exhibition side in a game against Calgary. The original club was started by a group of guys (15 in all) that had played elsewhere and had moved to Banff to continue playing Rugby. (They just couldn't live without Rugby).

The team continued on for the next 5 years as an exhibition team, playing different teams from all over. Games were played against British Army teams, Jasper or any other team which was travelling through.

In 1981 the team then joined the Southern Alberta League in the 3rd Division. The club played in the 3rd division in 1982 and in 1983 where they won their division. After winning the 3rd division titles, the club moved to 2nd division where they went on to win both division and provincial cups. They won a further 3 in 1985, 1994 and 1998.

The club still plays in the 2nd division and has it's share of ups and downs just like any other club, but to this day, some of the founding members still show up on game day to watch the match and to share a pint with the team.
